Ironman Regensburg - Race Story

corrine2

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes beforehand and your congratulations since - it was quite simply an amazing day! As I’m sure most of you know, Rob has made all of this possible for me and I would never have come this far without his enthusiasm, advice and support - for which I am hugely grateful.

We had a race plan and managed to stick to it pretty closely. The swim was a little slower than my ambitions, and let’s just says that I’ll be working on it! I was out of the water in 1.02 and moving swiftly on to T1 and the bike...

Whizzing through transition without any dramas, I was out on the bike course and determined to start making some progress through the pack. It was a two loop course with a long gradual 15km climb and the rest of it was undulating and flat. Just as I was coming onto the course I saw my Dad and he hollered that I was 33rd female, so I kept my elbows and knees tucked in, my head down and started chasing. The first lap pretty much flew by and I was just trying to concentrate on drinking enough, and keeping an eye on my speed. The wind picked up a bit on the second lap and I also started to think that perhaps I’d started out a little full of excitement on the first lap. It became a little more like hard work towards the end of the bike but I tried to keep my form together and started to look forward to the run. I was off the bike in 5.15 and in an out of transition two smoothly.

I really enjoyed the marathon - the first 5k was nippy, through town, lots of crowds, and I was all fired up to get going on the final section of the race. Second 5k, inevitably I eased up a bit. It was a 4-lap route around the town, some cobbles and park paths (gritty) but essentially flat so it was good to pass the crowds every so often and my family was there with Rob whooping and cheering like the best of them! By the start of the run I was in about 8th place and quickly passed a few more girls in the first lap. Rob did a fabulous job of giving me feedback throughout and also keeping me topped up with carbohydrate fluids and energy gels. At about the 27km mark I had one of the race marshals cycling with me and they told me that I was in 3rd place as a girl in front had dropped out...... after cycling with me for 15 min or so he then said - oh no, sorry you are not in third place, she is still running, bye! And cycled off! Still, sticking to the plan, I kept running (as you do!) and by the end of the third lap I was catching the girl who was in third and passed her soon after (with lots of whoops and encouragement from Rob and family). Obviously I tried to run past like I was a gazelle and it was no effort at all ;o) Having said that, I did feel strong all through the run and I was able to enjoy the last stage of the race, finishing the marathon in 3.19.

A special day indeed –

Hawaii here I come!
