My first triathlon – by Ian Weatherall aged 43 ¾ years old

(Milton Keynes Big Cow 24th May)

Up at 04.30! On the road by 05.00! Sure I’d forgotten something – so much to remember! Not like running races or duathlons.

With the help of Matt and Jo I’d registered, got my chip and racked my bike all by 06.15 – with all 3 of us starting between 07.45 and 08.15.

Back to the car for a bit of a rest – plenty of time before start! Couldn’t relax though, stomach turning over and over. Matt signals and he’s off to get ready.

Fifteen minutes later we’re off too, queue for loos and start setting out our gear. Then ‘TRANSITION CLOSED – EVERYBODY OUT’ comes the announcement! WHAT?!? – Hopping along, panicking, wetsuit half on now in panic mode – see my wave running to the lake. 1 ½ hours prep time and I’m still late!!

Didn’t hear the start signal for the swim – too busy talking to other virgins. Not time for nerves then! Swim went OK – thought all was good until I noticed I was swimming alongside a ‘breast stroker’ at the same pace.....

I survived the swim. Bike was mildly undulating and passed without any issues (picked a few places up even!) Looking forward to the run only to be struck with mother of all stitches half way round – picked up a few more places but was in agony!!

I’d done it – my first TRIATHLON! Didn’t mention transitions – much to work on there, i.e. probably best not to put your socks on for a 5k run!! Plus always put your time chip under your wetsuit (but hey, you guys know all these things already).

Room for improvement, but now looking forward to Windsor. I am now a triathlete or ‘geek’ as Mrs Weatherall affectionately referred to all the other competitors on the day!

Ian

PS It does seem like a lot of faffing around for one race

PPS Finished in respectable time of 1hr 11 mins

PPS Couldn’t have done it without all the help and tips from Matt and Jo! (Jo is a bit grumpy early in the morning and before races; oh and if she’s tired or hungry or both and if her back hurts... She did smile though – when we were back in the Vannie beer garden by 11am for a Full English!!)
